1920’s Women’s Underwear Pt. 2

LINGERIE AND EROTICISM

Until 1930, eroticism took up residence in that magical place between stocking-top and knickers. in the strip of bare skin glimpsed when a woman crossed her legs or got out of a car. “That fold of flesh”, comments Jacques Laurent, “calls to mind a bracelet, if not indeed a shackle. And it signals a region of the body defenceless to the waist, or better still, all the way to the breast, given that dresses and slips are rarely close-fitting”. (1)

Next on the scene were the sensible French “Petit Bateau” knickers. These were pure white, made of ribbed cotton, and might be seen if the wind were right. (1)

But women who wore little or nothing beneath their dresses held little or no appeal for fetishists, or indeed for manufacturers. It was a temporary setback. As always, when fashion lacks imagination, designers take their inspiration from the past. In this case, it was nostalgic memories of the black lacy underwear worn by women of the night, and the frilly knickers of French cancan dancers. This marked the return of the “Coucher d’Yvette” and Victorian underwear. (1)

The corset also became retro in style, worn by dominant women. (1)

Yva Richard also featured as the “trade mark” of a shop near the Opéra in Paris which, in the 1920s, sold sexy lingerie and was visited in secret by daring middle-class women. One of the first mail-order organisations, it sent out fetishist catalogues which showed the voluptuously underclad Yva as soubrette, exhibitionist, sailor, rider and school girl – catering, in short, for all tastes.
